At the 2022 NAB Show in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Byron Allen said that his ownership of The Weather Channel was highly important, given his passion toward combating global climate change. Part of this commitment is delivering weather-related news and information to all across the U.S., just as it has done over the past 40 years.
Now, TWC has a sibling offering el pronóstico, or perhaps el clima or el tiempo de hoy.
Allen Media Group on Monday (5/2) formally launched “free television network” The Weather Channel en Español.
It’s an online offering, with access via streaming platforms only.
Inaugural advertisers include Ford, GEICO, General Motors, Toyota, and Walmart — a statement that shows the company suing McDonald’s for racial discrimination is attracting ad dollars from major national brands.
The Weather Channel en Español will have a similar look and feel to its English-language older brother, with immersive mixed reality (IMR) technology and connectivity to Allen Media Group platforms such as Pattrn — The Weather Channel’s climate, environment and sustainability network.
Allen commented, “The Hispanic marketplace is indexing extremely well with streaming services and is severely underserved. Our launch of The Weather Channel en Español is historic and is a recognition of the continued and significant growth of the U.S. Hispanic population and the constant need to keep the entire public informed and safe as multi-billion dollar weather disasters are on the rise — especially in communities where Spanish is spoken as both the primary and secondary language in millions of households throughout America.”
Taking the role of TWC en Español Editor-in-Chief is Sussy Ruiz.
The first on-camera meteorologists are Albert Martinez, Henry Golac, Milmar Ramirez, Jessica Fernandez, Abel Hernandez and Lorena Lim.
Martinez was previously the Chief Meteorologist for Univision’s Despierta America morning program and on its Noticiero Univision newscasts.
Golac was formerly the Chief Meteorologist at Telemundo’s Arizona operations and has experience at Univision’s Orlando stations, and at WJAN-41 “America TeVe” in Miami.
Ramirez was an anchor at Telemundo and Univision stations in Dallas, during respective periods at the broadcast stations; Fernandez joins the network from Univision’s WLTV-23 in Miami and previously held positions as a meteorologist at FOX-affiliated WSVN-7 in Miami.
Hernandez has worked in Spanish-language television at stations in New York, Miami, Dallas, and San Antonio; Lim joins The Weather Channel en Español from Salt Lake City, Utah where she was a chief meteorologist for the local Telemundo affiliate. Lim is a native of Cuba.
