Two Chevy Truck Brands To Lose HD Radio Option

A chip shortage has been wreaking havoc on the automobile industry, hampering efforts to get new vehicles into showrooms and out the door with consumers who desire to replace their current ride.

Now, Chevrolet has alerted consumers that certain model year 2021 and 2022 pickup trucks will not come with Xperi’s HD Radio. And, the automotive company says, it is due to a chip shortage.

According to the GM Trucks enthusiast blog, citing company communication, certain 2021 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups, as well as all 2022 model year Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 HD and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD pickups, will will be built without the components needed for HD radio.

While the chip shortage will likely be short-term, GM Trucks cites an e-mail in noting that this change is expected to be permanent.

“The shift will take place starting with vehicles produced on or after July 12, 2021,” the blog says.

The affected 2021 models include:

  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    • LS
    • RST
    • LT
    • Trail Boss
    • LTZ
    • High Country
  • GMC Sierra 1500
    • SLE
    • SLT
    • Elevation
    • AT4
    • Denali

A $50 MSRP credit is being applied for these vehicles, GM Trucks says; the change will be reflected in all consumer- and dealer-facing marketing materials.
