Alabama ‘Weevil’ Puts WOOF On Its Own Leash

When one thinks of the broadcast media leaders who have made their imprint in the Wiregrass region of Alabama and the city of Dothan, few hold a candle to the late Agnes Dowling Simpson.

With R.A. Dowling, she launched a Class D AM in 1947 that’s still very much in operation today. In September 1964 came a 100kw Class C1 FM, today a top-rated Adult Contemporary station that saw the Oct. 1 retirement of morning host John Houston after 44 years in the business.

Houston’s retirement could have been a harbinger for what’s next at these stations, which now include an FM translator for that 73-year-old AM. They’re being transferred from Agnes’ estate to the owner of a Class A Country station serving Enterprise, Fort Rucker and its cit of license, Elba, Ala.
