In 2014, it was a finalist for Legendary Station of the Year at the NAB Marconi Radio Awards.

Now, a heralded 3kw FM serving the Michigan cities of Adrian, Blissfield, Clinton and Tecumseh can take pride in knowing its on the radar of the Chairman of the FCC.

Ajit Pai on January 23 dropped by the studios of Lenawee Broadcasting-owned WLEN-FM in Adrian, Mich.

The stop at WLEN came as part of a multi-faceted trip to the Toledo, Ohio, area which included looking at some rural fiber build out in the Tecumseh and Petersburg areas.

Pai participated in an on-air interview, in which he shared how impressed he was with the efforts of local broadcasters across the U.S.

“I really enjoy the work that broadcasters do across the country, radio and TV,” Pai said. “I’ve had the chance to hear about WLEN for many years, having seen the awards they’ve gotten. But, to actually get to visit the station, to see how they are binding the community together with high-quality programming and news coverage and the like was just so rewarding. To me, [GM] Julie Koehn and others, WLEN exhibits the best in broadcasting, which is local.”

WLEN signed on the air in 1965 and has been owned by the Koehn family ever since.
