WOMC-Detroit dishes up DJ nostalgia

womclogoThis weekend, Detroit’s WOMC-FM (104.3) will be broadcasting “Radio Recall,” a look back at the classic Detroit disc jockeys — and music — that provided the soundtrack to those classic cars of the 1950s and ’60s.

Former Detroit air personality Jim Hampton, who was on the air at WXYZ, WJBK, WABX and WCAR, produced the three-hour program, which airs from 5-8 a.m. on WOMC, Saturday.

The show consists of vintage airchecks — snippets from long-ago radio programs — featuring talent including Robin Seymour, Dick Purtan (when he was first on WKNR), Tom Shannon, Scott Regen, Lee Alan, Big Jim Edwards, Bob Green, Dave Shafer, Robert E. Lee and Joel Sebastian, among others. Hampton also features what he sees as the 30 most important car songs of the era — including the Beach Boys’ “Little Deuce Coupe” and “Fun, Fun, Fun,” Jan & Dean’s “Drag City,” Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally” and Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene,” among others.

“I’ve been trying to keep the memories alive,” Hampton says from his home in Los Angeles. “Even today, people remember the names of those (radio) personalities. This is a three-hour show, so things are pretty short, but I tried to get as many of the heritage guys in there as I could.”
