Wieland To Add Vilmenay’s Duties For CBS L.A.

LOS ANGELES — The General Manager for the stations that comprise CBS Colorado will be adding similar duties for the Paramount Global properties that make up CBS Los Angeles by earning a promotion to Regional GM, effective October 14.

The change for Tim Wieland comes alongside the coming departure of Joel Vilmenay.

Details of Wieland’s appointment was shared in an internal e-mail sent Wednesday morning by Jennifer Mitchell, President of CBS Television Stations in the West and Midwest.

Wieland will relocate to Los Angeles, and Mitchell says she looks forward to working “much closer with him as he takes charge of the market.”

She also calls Wieland “an outstanding leader with over 30 years of broadcast journalism experience.”

Wieland joined CBS Denver’s KCNC-4 in 2001 as its Assistant News Director. He would rise to News Director, and ultimately to General Manager, in August 2021. Under his leadership, CBS Denver enjoyed ratings gains in key dayparts.

Why does Mitchell consider Wieland to be “the perfect fit for this important role?”

She shares, “Tim has been instrumental in leading the community journalism model in Denver, a pioneering approach that has reshaped how we cover local news and serve our viewers. This model has now become a cornerstone for other CBS stations across the country. In addition, Tim successfully executed a First Alert Weather brand in Denver, which has strengthened the station’s connection with its community—an experience that will be invaluable as we continue to grow the Next Weather brand here in L.A.”

An in-studio lunchtime meet and greet offers staffers their first opportunity to meet Wieland.

There was no comment as to why Vilmenay’s duties are being absorbed by Wieland. Vilmenay joined KCBS-2 and KCAL-9, which runs the OTT-distributed CBS Los Angeles digital offering, exactly three years ago as President/GM. He was previously in a similar role at WDSU-6 in New Orleans, a Hearst Television station. His first experience as a GM came at Hearst’s KETV-7, the Hearst-owned ABC affiliate in Omaha, Neb., from 2003-2007.

In January 2021, Vilmenay was one of 13 senior-level leaders named to the NAB’s newly created Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee.
