Kalil-Brokered Deals Formally Close

The sale of a pair of Washington, D.C.-area AM stations handled by Tucson-based media brokerage Kalil & Co. has formally closed.

So has the transfer of control of an FM radio station in the Valley of the Sun from Cesar Chavez Foundation to another non-secular operator.

In mid-September, TRANSACTIONS TODAY first reported on the acquisition by Potomac Radio Group Inc. of WCRW-AM, licensed to Leesburg, Va., and WUST-AM, licensed to Washington, D.C., with its transmitter located in Fairfax, Va.

Potomac Radio LLC and New World Radio teamed to sell their respective AM radio stations in the National Capital Region, and the stations netted $750,000 apiece.

The sellers are headed by Alan Pendleton and Dick Aronoff, and closing occurred Wednesday, officially handing control to an entity that has no other radio stations.

WCRW has 50kw during daylight hours and 1.4kw at night. WUST is a 50kw daytimer.

Meanwhile, VCY America is now officially the licensee of KCCF-FM 88.3 in Phoenix, a Class C3 noncomm.

Earlier this year, the Cesar Chávez Foundation — operator of the regional Mexican “LaCampesina” network forked over a hefty check to the U.S. Treasury as part of a Consent Decree with the FCC.

This resolved, without guilt, some serious underwriting violations at this FM serving the Valley of the Sun.

That property was sold in late September, for $4.9 million.

That’s a hefty sum for a signal that VCY America will effectively share with Family Stations. The facility is a rare dual license, meaning Family Stations operates it as KPHF-FM from 7:30pm-5am.

Family Stations has no involvement in this transaction.

VCY America is a Wisconsin-based owner of 25 full-power stations and 15 translators headed by Jim Schneider. VCY also owns a full-power TV station in Milwaukee.
