Idaho’s Main NPR Member Stations Suffer Unplanned Outage

Since late Wednesday, Boise State Public Radio‘s entire network of stations went dark. Now, the NPR Member stations’ licensee is sharing that it is back on air on some channels “with temporary workarounds.”

However, online streaming remains off air. The problem is all tied to manhole work that disrupted a critical fiber optic cable.

The wholesale silence of BSPR was blamed on contractors working for Syringa Networks, who were installing a concrete collar around a manhole in Boise. They damaged the fiber optic cable, resulting in an internet outage to all on Boise State’s campus. It also damaged more than 200 fiber connections.

Boise State’s main campus was able to reroute and restore internet connectivity. But because of Boise State Public Radio’s proximity to the damaged cable, an immediate reroute of the network could not be done in a timely manner.

As of 2:30pm local time Friday (8/25), both BSPR’s News & Music live streams were back online — via a cellular modem.

On the air late Thursday were the following BSPR stations:

  • KBSX 91.5 Boise
  • KBSU 90.3 Boise
  • KBSQ 90.7 McCall
  • KBSS 91.1 Sun Valley
  • KBSW 91.7 Twin Falls
