Sony/ATV renews with BMI
Sony/ATV Music Publishing has agreed to return licensing and royalty distribution authority to Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) for all categories of public performance uses. Consistent with a recent Federal Court ruling, the new agreement will leave current licenses and the flow of royalties to songwriters and publishers from hundreds of thousands of licensees undisturbed.
Community service keeps broadcasters relevant
There was a time not so long ago when broadcasters enjoyed an exclusive franchise. Cable television was less a competitor and more a collaborator. The early cable TV systems merely relayed the signals of stations to areas with weak reception. Original programming for cable was non-existent with the exception of the “weather channel” where a camera scanned wind, temperature and barometric pressure readings to an instrumental music accompaniment. Fast forward to 2014:

Irvine, CA-based Ubiquity Broadcasting Corp. has entered into a non-binding deal to acquire ZUUS Media, a next generation media company operating the ZUUS multi-platform music video network. ZUUS is a music service offering 150 curated digital music video channels based on genre, decade and “mood” across mobile, tablet, web, Facebook, and connected TV platforms.
CBS Local Digital breaks monthly records
CBS Local Digital Media’s websites and mobile apps attracted 56.8 million unique users – a new record for a single month – in January. Last month’s traffic topped the previous all-time high (50.6 million in April 2013) by 12% and was up 37% compared to January 2013.

Democratic leaders introduce Net Neutrality legislation
Reps. Henry Waxman and Anna Eshoo introduced H.R. 3982, the “Open Internet Preservation Act,” with a Senate companion bill to be introduced by Sen. Ed Markey, to protect consumers and innovation online. Last month, the D.C. Circuit struck down the FCC’s Open Internet rules preventing broadband providers from blocking or discriminating against content online. The bill would restore these rules until the FCC takes new, final action in the Open Internet proceeding.
