College Football Game Gets Radio Coverage In Navajo

Come Saturday (9/28), one tuned to a Crownpoint, N. Mex., FM radio station may hear something that sounds awfully familiar, but perhaps largely unintelligible — unless one knows the language.

The New Mexico State Aggies‘ home game against the University of New Mexico will be broadcast in the Navajo language, thanks to an arrangement between NM State Athletics and its multimedia rights partner, Van Wagner.

Airing the game is KCZY-FM 107.3, a 6kw Class A FM operated by Navajo Technical University

The game is scheduled to kick off at 5pm Pacific/8pm Eastern.

KCZY Station Manager Cuyler Frank will handle the play-by-play.  On September 23, 2005, Frank was the first to announce an NCAA D1 Football game in the Navajo language. He previously announced Aggie Football and basketball games for parts of 10 seasons.

The English-language broadcast of the game will be available on 100kw Class C KXPZ-FM 99.5 in Las Cruces, N. Mex. Spanish-language coverage will be available on K244FF “96.7 La X” in Las Cruces.
