It’s official: the owner of six radio stations and a digital company serving Mississippi and Alabama has acquired locally focused community-based Darkhorse Press, described as the “fastest-growing news source in Mississippi.”
The transaction, of which details are not known, positions Darkhorse Press as a strong local digital news and advertising hub for Digio Strategies.
“I’m honored to be taking my decades of experience in journalism and joining forces with some of the most respected talent in the radio and media industry in Mississippi,” said Darkhorse Press owner Therese Apel. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grow in a way that keeps us authentic, local, and Mississippi-centric while enabling us to bring you the news and stories that you want to see and hear with much more momentum.”
Kelly Crocker, GM of Digio Strategies, added, “We are building our business for continued success for decades to come and by adding one of the most respected journalists to our team, this helps solidify our position in our state.”
The deal’s more immediate effects see Apel returning to local radio news, with reports airing on four FMs owned and operated by Digio, starting August 5. Breaking news bulletins will also be provided to two other FMs owned by Digio.

Digio is a Holladay family-owned entity created in February 2023.
