The ATSC 3.0 bandwagon keeps rolling on, and this time it has flipped the switch on a Mission Broadcasting-owned station that will serve as the “lighthouse” for NEXTGEN TV broadcasts in one of the biggest markets in the U.S. Southwest.
Thanks to MyNetwork TV affiliate KASY-50, the Albuquerque-Santa Fe television market today began airing NEXTGEN TV broadcasts for five local offerings.
That’s the station switching to ATSC 3.0, serving as the “lighthouse.”
The stations that are now offering ATSC 3.0-powered high definition digital TV transmissions are big ABC affiliate KOAT-7, owned by Hearst Television; and the stations in the market run by Nexstar Media Group, one of the industry’s main proponents of NEXTGEN TV.
Nexstar is the owner of KRQE-13, the dual CBS and FOX affiliate; it has a shared service agreement with Mission to handle master control and business services for KASY-50 and Mission sibling KWBQ-19, the CW affiliate. Both KRQE and KWBQ are offering NEXTGEN TV broadcasts.
But, the NBC affiliate, Hubbard Broadcasting‘s KOB-4, is not participating.
BitPath, which is developing new data broadcasting services, led the planning process and coordinated efforts across the four television stations.
