The 67th NJBA convention June 17 & 18, hit a home run in Atlantic City. President Paul Rotella, his staff and family (wife Camille and three sons) put together a world class show with an opening session to rival NAB events. Recently elected A.C. Mayor Don Guardian delivered an exuberant Boardwalk Empire Welcome. Then, NJBA Chairman Scott Taylor kicked things off with the All Star line up: RAB CEO Erica Farber, Emmis Chairman & Phone Chip Champion Jeff Smulyan, Connoisseur CEO Jeff Warshaw, CCU Research Guru Radha Subramanyam, Katz LA EVP Mary Beth Garber, Borell Associates CEO Gordon Borrell and Nielsen’s SVP Farshad Family. “Hometown Jersey Joe” Piscipo received the Howard Green NJBA Humanitarian Award and promptly belted out a stirring rendition of “N J, N J,” a great parody of The Chairman of the Board singing “New York, New York.”
Research Director Inc. President Charlie Sislen led the opening super session “Strategies for Radio to Combat the Pureplay Assault” and a later one on “Compelling Programming” with Emmis’ Skip Dillard plus a vintage, passionate live performance on news responsibility by WTOP General Emeritus Jim Farley. Sun Broadcast CEO Jason Baily, Nielsen, Compass Media and Wide Orbit were among the key sponsors. Top notch exhibitors included RCS, iBiquty Digital, four stations broadcasting live and even an appearance by “Barbecure Bob.” Spotlights were also on a 10 Man Major League “Sports Symposium”, “Crisis Management”, Bob McCurdy’s “Ear vs. Eye”, “Branding Yourself” and “Making Your Stations Local” with Radiate Media’s Ivan Shulman and NYSBA President Deon Levingston also shared the spotlight. The program was complete with Lifetime Achievement, Scholarship and Best Broadcast Awards.
