The Board of Directors for the Media Financial Management Association (MFM) and its BCCA subsidiary has approved a conference scholarship in honor of Steve McIntosh. The Belo Corporation financial executive was gunned down last April as he walked his three-year-old daughter out of her suburban Dallas pre-school.

The 2012 Steve McIntosh Memorial Scholarship will cover the major expenses associated with attending the association’s 52nd Annual Conference, Media Finance Focus 2012, May 21-23 in Las Vegas.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be currently employed by a media provider (any company eligible for MFM industry membership) and must have worked in the media industry for no more than five years as of February 29, 2012. Individuals who have received a conference scholarship from MFM in the past will not be eligible.  Likewise, any members of the Scholarship Selection Committee or MFM/BCCA’s board members and their immediate relative are ineligible.  Only completed applications received by 5 PM EST on February 29, 2012 will be considered.

McIntosh, 42, was Vice President and General Manager of Belo Advertising Customer Service, a unit within Belo Corp. Recognized for his pioneering work on a number of initiatives, including an ambitious project that was bent on rationalizing co-op advertising reimbursements, McIntosh was named one of MFM’s “People To Watch” in January 2011.

The 22-year-old man who shot him had received psychological counseling from McIntosh’s wife at the University of Texas at Arlington. The suspect killed himself after murdering McIntosh.

“Individuals like Steve McIntosh are the reason that the annual MFM/BCCA Conference is always so highly regarded by our attendees,” said Mary M. Collins, President and CEO of MFM and BCCA.  “Whether he was serving as a panelist, as a moderator or sitting in the audience, Steve could always be counted on to elevate session discussions into action plans for advancing industry practices, especially when it came to improving the advertiser’s experience with media businesses.  One of the best ways for us to remember him and help to ensure his commitment lives on into the future is though providing others with this exceptional opportunity to learn from industry leaders like Steve.”
