Rockefeller tees up FCC

Mark April 22 on your calendar – that’s the day the Senate Commerce Committee under Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) will kick off a hearing very broadly entitled “Reform of the Federal Communications Commission.” The announcement offers no detail and does not identify any witnesses. The meeting kicks off at 10AM.

Interestingly, it comes a day after the same committee will consider eight nominates for various posts within the administration, none of which have anything whatsoever to do with the FCC.

Sherburne B. Abbott seems to be the headliner in this batch of nominees, the prospective Associate Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy at the Executive Office of the President. Among the others, four are headed to the Department of Transportation, two to the Department of Commerce and one to the Federal Railroad Administration.

RBR/TVBR observation: We’ve heard this sort of talk many times over the past few years, and it’ll be interesting to hear what Rockefeller has up his sleeve. But you’d think the presence of a Julius Genachowski in the Chair would be a good head start toward the kind of FCC Rockefeller and other Democrats would like to see.
