WASHINGTON, D.C. — The House Appropriations Committee is proposing $40 million for public broadcasting’s Next Generation Warning System (NGWS) in the fiscal year 2025 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill.

Upon learning the news, the head of America’s Public Television Stations expressed his thanks.

“America’s Public Television Stations are grateful that the committee continues to support public broadcasters’ essential work in public safety,” said Patrick Butler, APTS’s President/CEO. “In a time of partisan division, we appreciate the bipartisan nature of this support, as both Republican and Democratic majorities have invested in this work over the past four years. From working with the California Office of Emergency Services on earthquake warnings to building emergency communications networks in Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee, America’s public television stations are partnering with local, State and federal agencies to save lives and protect property every day.”

Butler also thanked House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.) and Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) for their “strong support.”

Butler concluded that APTS is hopeful that the “strong bipartisan support for the Next Generation Warning System and public media, both in Congress and among the American people, will ultimately ensure that this vital infrastructure program is fully funded to our request of $56 million in the final FY 2025 appropriations package. The greater the investment, the safer the American people will be.”
