American Samoa is, of course, a US territory and broadcasting there is licensed and regulated by the FCC, just like on the mainland. And, just as with disasters here in the states, radio was a key player in getting word out as an earthquake and tsunami hit American Samoa on Wednesday.

We came across a report from the BBC with Lupe Lohmann of KKHJ-FM “93 KHJ.” She described how the station went into action, activating EAS without waiting for word from the island’s Homeland Security authorities.
