moving_truckWJAR-TV in Providence will be sliding one click down the television dial with the FCC’s blessing. The primary beneficiary of the move will be cell provider T-Mobile.

As a general rule, the FCC has been all for allowing the move WJAR is making – basically, vacating Channel 51, at the pinnacle of the current television spectrum band.

Getting clear of 51 will allow T-Mobile to start developing Lower 700 MHz band spectrum it acquired in an earlier auction.

In WJAR’s case, it won’t be moving very far – it’s headed for Channel 50.

The station is an NBC affiliate owned by Sinclair.

According to the FCC, in addition to clearing T-Mobile in Providence RI-New Bedford MA, it also opens up the Boston DMA for T-Mobile.
