NBCU finds buyer for third Los Angeles television station

Back before the joint venture between Comcast and NBCU has received regulatory blessings, NBCU promised to trim down its broadcast television holdings in the Los Angeles DMA. KWHY-TV 22 was placed in trust last spring for the purpose of finding a new owner. According to reports, that owner has been found.

The buyer is said to be Alex Meruelo of Meruelo Enterprises. Terms were not revealed.

NBC retains NBC KNBC-TV and Telemundo KVEA-TV in the DMA. Like KVEA, KWHY-TV is a Spanish language station, but is not affiliated with any major network.

The closing with Comcast is expected to take place Friday 1/28/11.

NBC Universal transferred the station, along with translators licensed to Santa Maria CA and San Luis Obispo CA under the care and feeding of Bahia Honda LLC, with Jose Cancela listed as Trustee. That transaction was accepted by the FCC 5/18/10.

Comcast and NBCU has promised to find a new owner that would enrich the diversity of the FCC broadcast licensee pool, and according to earlier RBR-TVBR reports, enlisted the aid of the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council to that end. It would appear that this endeavor was met with success.
