NBC: “The Voice,” “Smash” deliver the goods

NBC“The Voice” and “Smash” have led NBC to the nightlong ratings win among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49 and other key demographics, with “The Voice” topping all time-period competition head to head and tying for #1 for the night and “Smash” growing week to week by 6 percent in 18-49 rating (pending updates).  NBC has now won 11 of the last 12 Mondays that have not featured major sports competition, after having not won an in-season Monday with regular programming in four years


·       From 8-10 p.m. ET, “The Voice” (3.7 rating, 10 share in adults 18-49, 10.5 million viewers overall) ranks #1 in its time period versus ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49 and other key demographics, topping the 18-49 average of CBS’s 8-10 p.m. comedy block in 18-49 by a 12 percent margin (with a 3.7 rating vs. a 3.3), while also besting ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” in 18-49 by a 42 percent advantage (3.7 vs. 2.6).  Week to week, “The Voice” is up 6 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 3.7 from a 3.5) and up 10 percent or 1.0 million persons in total viewers (10.511 million vs. 9.515 million).

·       “The Voice” delivered substantial growth throughout this its telecast, with this half-hour track in 18-49 rating: 3.2, 3.7, 3.9, 4.2.  From its first half-hour to its fourth, “The Voice” grew by 31 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 4.2 from a 3.2).

“The Voice” has now generated NBC’s 14 highest non-Olympic 18-49 ratings in this slot in three years (since February 9, 2009).  Versus NBC’s averages in the time period this season prior to “The  Voice,” this week’s telecast is up 106 percent in 18-49 rating (with a 3.7 vs. a 1.8, “live plus same day”) and up 88 percent in total viewers (10.511 million vs. 5.587 million).

At 10 p.m. ET, “Smash” (1.9/5 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall) is currently delivering a week-to-week increase of 6 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.9 from a 1.8) and 11 percent in total viewers (5.918 million vs. 5.339 million), pending updates.   “Smash” is running within 2 shares of first-place in the time period among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49 and is #1 among those networks in women 18-34.

“Smash” has now delivered NBC’s 14 highest in-season 18-49 ratings in this time period since January 31, 2011.  This week’s “Smash” beat NBC’s time-period average this season prior to “Smash” by 90 percent in 18-49 rating (with a 1.9 vs. a 1.0) and by 53 percent in total viewers (5.918 million vs. 3.864 million).

In Late-Night Metered Markets Monday night:

In Nielsen’s 56 metered markets, household results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 2.7/7; CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman,” 2.3/6; and ABC’s combo of “Nightline,” 3.6/9; and “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” 1.8/5.

In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 0.8/4; “Late Show,” 0.6/3; “Nightline,” 1.1/5; and “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” 0.7/4.

At 12:35 a.m., “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” (1.3/5 in metered-market households) beat CBS’s “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (1.2/4).  In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, “Late Night” (0.5/3 in 18-49 with an encore) topped “Late Late Show” (0.4/2).

At 1:35 a.m., “Last Call with Carson Daly” averaged a 0.9/4 in metered-market households and a 0.3/3 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

For the Week:

·       “The Voice” has paced NBC’s primetime week of April 30-May 6, during which the network averaged a 1.6 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 5.1 million viewers overall, according to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.

·       Monday’s “The Voice” ranked #7 for the week among all primetime shows on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49, marking the 14th week in a row that “The Voice” has finished in the top seven among primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox.  Tuesday’s “The Voice” Results Show tied for #11 for the week in 18-49 and “The Office” tied for #27.  In the valuable adult 18-34 demo, Monday’s “The Voice” ranked #5, “The Office” tied for #7, Tuesday’s “The Voice” tied for #12, “Parks and Recreation” tied for #21 and “30 Rock” and “Community” tied for #27.

·       Primetime averages for the week of April 30-May 6 in adults 18-49 were Fox and CBS (2.2/7 each), ABC (2.0/6), NBC (1.6/5) and CW (0.6/2).  In overall total viewers the weekly averages were CBS (10.1 million), ABC (7.7 million), Fox (6.8 million), NBC (5.1 million) and CW (1.2 million).
