Longtime FCC Senior Staffer Roy Stewart Dies

royjstewartRoy Stewart, who joined the FCC in 1965 and spent 44 years at the Commission —  most notably as Chief and Senior Deputy Bureau Chief of the former Mass Media Bureau — died Monday (4/10) after a brief illness. The native of Brooklyn, N.Y., was 78 and lived in Northern Virginia.


Following U.S. military service, Stewart took a role at the Commission as an attorney in the Television Application Branch of the Broadcast Bureau. In 1974, he was appointed Chief of the Transfer Branch.

In December 1979, Stewart was made Chief of the Broadcast Bureau Renewal and Transfer Division. Following the reorganization of the Broadcast Bureau in 1982, he was named Chief of the Mass Media Bureau’s Video Services Division.

In October 1989, Stewart was appointed Chief of the Mass Media Bureau.

Services will be held on Monday, April 17, from noon to 2pm at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road in Fairfax, Va. Interment will follow immediately after at Fairfax Memorial Park.
