GMA claims win over Today for the first time in 16 years

ABC NewsABC’s “Good Morning America” is celebrating the latest Nielsen numbers. For the first time in more than 16 years GMA is #1 over NBC’s “Today.


According to the Fast National Preliminary Nielsen data, ABC says that for the week of April 9th GMS drew 5.145 million viewers, outperforming Today, which had 5.134 million. It is the first time that GMA outdrew Today during the course of a week since the week of December 4, 1995.

“This is an exciting day but we will save any celebrating for when the final numbers come in on Thursday. Like every week, we want to thank our loyal viewers, our stations, our amazing team of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Sam Champion, Josh Elliott, Lara Spencer, and our dedicated staff and crew for getting us to this amazing point,” said Tom Cibrowski, Senior Executive Producer of GMA.

GMA  improved on the year-ago week by +7% in Total Viewers (4.812 million on w/o 4/4/11), while NBC’s “Today” (-9%) decreased.

For the 3rd time in the last 4 weeks, “GMA” ranked as the No. 1 morning newscast twice during the course of a week in Total Viewers, out-delivering NBC’s “Today” by +366,000 on Wednesday (5.585 million vs. 5.219 million – 4/11/12) and by +333,000 on Friday (5.085 million vs. 4.752 million – 4/13/12).
