Fred UptonIt’s not easy being a moderate these days, or even anything less than a full-throttle ideologue sometimes. For House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), it’s meant not only being a target for Democrats and Democrat-leaning PACS, it means also getting attacked from conservative organizations like Club for Growth. But now one right-of-center PAC is coming to his aid.

The group is the American Action Network, formed by former Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN). According to The Hill, it is also helping out Senators Dick Lugar (R-IN) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT), who have been facing a stiff primary challenges from the right in their bids for another term.

Upton had to battle opposition just to get the Energy and Commerce chair, where former Ranking Member Joe Barton (R-TX) was also bidding for the top leadership role.

Television advertising will be going up in Upton’s behalf, supported by a direct mail campaign, courtesy of AAN. The buy is said to be in the low six-figures.
