“Dump Starbucks” campaign launched over gay marriage

The National Organization for Marriage, which is lobbying against gay marriage is asking coffee drinkers all over the world to boycott Starbucks because of its support for gay rights — the second boycott effort to gain national attention.

NOM will place ads throughout the United States, as well as in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, urging consumers to “Dump Starbucks” because purchasing a cup of Starbucks equals support for gay marriage. The “Dump Starbucks” campaign will ask consumers to join the campaign against Starbuck’s corporate irresponsibility.

The effort urges consumers to boycott Starbucks and contact the manager of their local Starbucks to complain about the corporation’s attempts to redefine marriage for all of society. The group will also launch a campaign to inform consumers around the world about the company’s activities. Starbucks operates in 55 countries including many where same-sex marriage is strongly opposed.

NOM is also asking visitors to its website sign a petition denouncing Starbucks.

Here’s creative for the ad (SSM = Single Sex Marriage):

“Unlike our opponents, we do not target whole companies for the actions of an individual business executive in that company,” said Brian Brown, NOM president. “But Starbucks has taken a corporate position in support of redefining marriage for all of society. We will not tolerate an international company attempting to force its misguided values on citizens. The majority of Americans and virtually every consumer in some countries in which Starbucks operates believe that marriage is between one man and one woman. They will not be pleased to learn that their money is being used to advance gay marriage in society.”

The effort was announced after the annual Starbucks shareholders meeting 3/21 in Seattle, where NOM spokesmen asked the board on its new policies promoting gay marriage and demanded protection against discrimination for employees, vendors and customers who disagree.

  1. I am not a big fan of Starsbuck and it has nothing to do with “social justice” displays such as this.
I just never saw the point in paying six dollars for a cup of coffee that I would just “piss away” an hour later. A one dollar cup of coffee serves that need just fine.

  2. In direct response to NOM’s boycott campaign against Starbuck’s, I am taking action! I am going to go to my local Starbuck’s and tell the manager that I am in his coffee shop in response to the NOM boycott so that I purchase coffee for myself and my room mate. Support those that support equality.

  3. I think the author is trying to draw a false parallel to the Boycott Rush movement. Let’s see what revenues say.

  4. I do not generally go to Starbucks, but I will now. I have made a poster size sign to show my support for Starbucks and against NOM. Keep up the good work Starbucks, you just gained a regular customer.

  5. Well, I am not sure about completely boycotting Starbucks, but by the looks of things, Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown should start boycotting the triple whip carmel machiattos they are obviously guzzling with gusto. Is this a mean and petty thing to say? The actions of NOM are mean, petty, misguided and are offensive to millions of Americans. They are spending millions of dollars a year in an attempt to keep intact the rather sick joy they find in base discrimination.

  6. Brian Brown, President NOM: “The majority of Americans and virtually every consumer in some countries in which Starbucks operates believe that marriage is between one man and one woman.”

It’s one thing to blow smoke yourself. Quite another to speak for the “majority of Americans” or “virtually every consumer in some countries.”

Hey Brian, did you know virtually every Starbucks in some counties have one bathroom for consumers. It has both a male and female symbol on the door.
