Are Headphone Jacks Going Away?

Mark RamseyHeadphone jacks will become a thing of the past.

So says consultant Mark Ramsey, passing on a rumor that the headphone jack will be missing — on purpose — when Apple releases the iPhone 7.

“No headphone jack means no place to plug in your earbuds, headphones, or stereo cable,” he writes.

That’s not good for radio, because wires are the antenna for smartphones that contain active FM chips. NextRadio uses the cord as the antenna, for example.

Ramsey is not saying the Apple decision will have any effect on NextRadio, however the trend in consumer electronics is to get rid of the cord.

That’s been happening in the car for a while; Millennials would much rather their smartphone connect wirelessly with the infotainment system than use a cord.

Note some news reports say Apple may have backed off leaving the headphone jack out of the iPhone 7 so stay tuned.
