On Tuesday, June 13, in the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, Ill., a radio industry pioneer passed away at the age of 89.

For generations of FM radio listeners who tuned to Album-Oriented Rock (AOR) stations in the late 1960s and 1970s, through the Rock n’ Roll and Classic Rock stations of today, this individual may be to thank for his pioneering view of a band largely reserved for Classical concertos and “wallpaper music” — a.k.a. Muzak-delivered instrumentals fueling the Beautiful/Easy Listening format.

This individual is Century Broadcasting Corp. founder and President George Collias.
